This project revitalises a fire-damaged commercial site, retaining part of the former Gladstone Hotel while introducing new construction in place of the original building. The adjoining bar and TAB structure was incorporated into the redevelopment, forming a two-level aluminium-clad element alongside a new free-form copper addition.

The exterior cladding of natural copper, ebonised cedar and silver aluminium gives the building a distinct and carefully considered character. The defined forms differentiate the retained and new portions, creating a clear relationship between them. Material contrast and precise detailing lend the building a sculptural quality while maintaining durability and restraint.

The completed development now houses the Christchurch office of Baldasso Cortese Noordanus. The project demonstrates how adaptive reuse, combined with confident material selection, can reinvigorate a prominent site. What was once damaged and underutilised has been reshaped into a purposeful workplace that contributes positively to its urban setting.
