Fire Shelter & Multi- Purpose

Client:
Cistercian Monks of Tarrawarra Abbey
Location:
Yarra Glen | Victoria Australia
Delivered:
2015

Located within the grounds of Tarrawarra Abbey, this multi-purpose building was conceived in response to the 2009 grass fires that passed close to the site. Designed as a fire shelter, it provides a robust sanctuary while complementing the Abbey’s existing timber buildings.

The structure is embedded into the gentle slope of the landscape and constructed with in-situ concrete external walls, utilising their inherent thermal mass and fire-resistant qualities. A planted green roof further enhances fire protection and improves thermal performance. Additional environmentally sustainable design initiatives include natural ventilation, rainwater storage for irrigation and landscaping, and double-glazed windows shielded by copper shrouds and protective screens to meet BAL requirements.

Rebated patterns within the banded concrete reference the Tarrawarra Abbey motif, subtly connecting the new building to its setting. Internally, polished concrete floors and timber linings create a warm, grounded atmosphere that responds to the rural environment. Together, these elements balance resilience and refinement, delivering a building that is both protective and contextually sensitive.
