Verkerks Butcher Shop in Christchurch continues a family business tradition dating back to the 1880s. The 1969 building was replaced to accommodate modern operations, including refrigerated display counters, preparation areas, mechanical services, and office space, all within an ambitious eleven-week timeframe.

The design responds to both operational and aesthetic needs. The shop is divided into public and back-of-house areas, with a first-floor addition providing expanded administration space and an open void over the meat preparation area. Floating refrigerated counters, Terrazite floors and circular chill wells maximise functionality while creating a clean, uncluttered environment. External design gestures, including a primary-coloured feature wall and silver-and-glass shopfront, clearly differentiate the public and private zones.

Inside, materiality, colour and lighting enhance both display and experience. Subtle purple accents complement the colour of fresh meat, while coffered ceilings and bulkheads articulate functional zones and integrate shelving and display counters. The result is a contemporary, efficient and visually engaging shop that supports the business and its community.
