Arrowtown Primary School sits in the historic township of Arrowtown on the edge of the Wakatipu Basin. One of Central Otago’s larger primary schools and a valued community hub, it required redevelopment to address growing enrolments and outdated facilities while preserving its small-school character and “Go for Gold” ethos.

The brief called for a dynamic, future-focused setting where children feel comfortable, supported and inspired. In response, the design introduces flexible learning areas that accommodate a range of teaching approaches, from larger collaborative groups to more intimate sessions. A strong indoor–outdoor relationship connects classrooms to the surrounding landscape, grounding daily learning in the natural character of Arrowtown.

The completed building aligns closely with the school’s educational objectives, providing welcoming spaces for both students and the wider community. Carefully integrated landscape and architecture contribute to a calm and settled learning culture, with the Principal noting that the environment has encouraged students’ enthusiasm and daily engagement with school life.
