The J. A. Kearney Extension marks the fifth stage of St Kevin’s College’s 2007 masterplan, supporting an expanding curriculum and creating a clear transition toward tertiary-style learning. As the third development within the Heyington Campus, the four-level building brings together design and technology facilities, a study centre and six science laboratories in a single, purpose-built hub.

The architectural form steps and twists to mediate between the surrounding two-storey context and an existing five-storey sheer wall. A dark, ventilated screen wraps the exterior, reducing heat load while limiting reflection within the natural river setting. This sculpted outer layer references the crafted, hands-on activities housed within the design technology centre, giving the building a strong but considered identity.

Terraced levels create additional rooftop space, extending learning outdoors and providing dedicated areas for the student centre. Together, the formal response and internal programme establish a contemporary academic environment that supports senior students as they move toward more independent, self-directed study.
