Burnside High School’s redevelopment has been guided by a series of interactive master planning workshops with staff and Board representatives. The school serves a diverse community and is well known for its specialist music programme and strong international enrolment. The master plan provides a framework for a current roll of 2,100 students, with capacity to grow to 2,700 over time.

Stage 1 focuses on consolidating a previously dispersed science faculty, resolving health and safety issues associated with facilities spread across six buildings, and supporting closer collaboration between science and technology departments. Construction has been carefully sequenced to allow the school to maintain its teaching programme while managing a temporary reduction in roll. Early site investigations identified the need for substantial infrastructure upgrades, including increased electrical capacity and a more efficient heating and cooling strategy. The shift from a diesel boiler to high-efficiency VRF heat pump technology establishes a cleaner energy pathway, with systems designed to expand alongside future stages and opportunities being explored to further improve the sustainability of existing plant.

With a redevelopment of this scale, cost efficiency has remained central to the design response. Value strategies have included refurbishment of the main administration building and retained teaching blocks along Memorial Avenue. A robust decanting and demolition plan underpins the works, minimising disruption across the active campus. Stage 1 is on programme and within budget for completion in May 2024, with subsequent stages now progressing through development.
