Hillmorton High School, part of the Ministry of Education Christchurch Rebuild Programme, is designed to support a roll of up to 2,000 students in Years 7–13 while celebrating the school’s cultural diversity. The redevelopment aims to strengthen the school’s presence in the local community and provide a welcoming, inclusive environment for all students.

The masterplan combines upgrades to existing buildings with the construction of a new purpose-built Middle School comprising 22 general learning spaces. The design process was highly collaborative, involving administration, teachers, parents, and students to ensure that growth does not compromise the school’s caring and inclusive culture. The Middle School incorporates spaces for Ko Taku Reo (Deaf Education) and visually impaired students, featuring integrated visual warning systems and flexible spaces that allow participation alongside Hillmorton High students. A new landscaped pedestrian boulevard will connect the Middle School to the Upland block, a Special Needs Unit, further reinforcing inclusivity and connectivity across the campus.

Alongside the new construction, five existing blocks, including the Gym, Hall, Nelson Block (Block D) and Cebus Block (Block H), are receiving structural strengthening and weathertightness upgrades. Together, these interventions create a resilient, adaptable campus that balances expansion with community, ensuring that Hillmorton High can accommodate growth while maintaining its inclusive, student-centered environment.
