St Monica’s Senior Centre involved the modernisation of a 1917 heritage building, transforming an underutilised courtyard into a central modern learning environment. The new space unifies six learning areas and a presentation zone for over 150 Year 5 and 6 students, providing a sophisticated environment to support senior students transitioning to high school while respecting the heritage context.

The design employs a restrained material palette and custom joinery to create a cohesive and refined environment. Learning areas are varied and flexible, supporting both individual and collaborative work while fostering independence and engagement. The space balances functionality with a sense of elegance, ensuring students experience a mature and focused learning environment.

A key feature is the sculptural ceiling, designed to capture light and sky. Its gentle curve links the two sides of the former courtyard, terminating in a mirrored horizon and punctuated by repeating organic “pebble” forms. This thoughtful intervention enhances the spatial experience, promotes a mature learning philosophy, and accommodates future growth while maintaining a connection to the building’s heritage.
